A glinting object appeared in her vision. Gabs was holding a pocket knife out, her lips pressed thin. Rose took it. Gabby looked away quickly as Rose cut her thumb and squeezed to make the blood well. She pressed it to the book.

Dark veins spread from her thumb, but they were thin, and weak. Still, the book slowly warmed, and the ancient curlicues on the first page glimmered and then rearranged themselves into English, although the ink didn’t darken much at all, and the page remained somewhat cracked. Rose sagged with a sigh.
